Time for a New Career or New Trade? 5 Tips for a Smooth Transition

It’s not uncommon for someone to change jobs multiple times throughout their lives. Yet, changing careers completely is a different story. However, it’s more common than you might think.

Whether you’re unhappy with your trade or something else has sparked a passion, changing careers can be a good thing. You should be happy and fulfilled in whatever you choose to do. If your current industry isn’t providing you with fulfillment, it’s okay to take a leap. Give yourself permission to try something different.

Still, if you’re considering switching careers, there are a few things to keep in mind.

It can be scary, at first. So, making the transition as smooth as possible is important. With that, let’s cover a few tips for your transition, so you’ll feel confident in your decision and move forward in a new career you love.

1. Understand “Why”

One of the biggest hurdles people face when switching careers is developing a purpose. You might know your current path isn’t right for you, but you might not have thought of an alternative one yet.

That’s okay and there’s no need to rush. Ask yourself why you want to change careers. What are you looking for? What kind of impact do you want to make with a different one? Once you’re able to answer those questions, you’ll start to develop a clearer picture of other potential career options.

2. Know Your Strengths

If you’ve worked in one industry for a long time, you may not have had to use all of your skills, strengths, and experiences.

Take the time to remember those skills and write them down. What are you really good at that you never were able to do in your previous job? Maybe there’s a different path out there that will let those skills shine. Remembering your strengths will boost your confidence and remind you who you are, and the type of work you want to do.

3. What Excites You?

The last thing you want to do is move from one career that feels unfulfilling to another. If you want a trade transition to be as smooth as possible, make sure you’re going into something you’re passionate about.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll make more money, have more success or establish more power. Those typically aren’t the things that will give you fulfillment.

Instead, focus on things that excite you. Which careers feature those things, and how do you want to fit into the equation?

4. Learn and Grow

It can be tempting to jump into a new career right away once you find something you’re excited about. But, doing your due diligence is important. If there is a certain career path you want to explore, take your time with it.

Sign up for classes at your local community college. Or, shadow someone in that career for a few days. Network as much as possible to get an inside look at what that career really entails.

5. Remember Your Personal Goals

Many people make the mistake of letting their careers control their lives. Unfortunately, that can cause you to become resentful of your career. It might make you feel burnt out, even if there isn’t really anything wrong with the job itself.

When you’re looking for a new career, consider how it can help you to achieve a better work/life balance. How will it allow you to focus on (and reach) your personal goals? Remember, your career is only a part of your life. It should be a part that makes your personal life more meaningful, instead of smothering it.

Transitioning into a new career might not be easy at first. But, by keeping these tips in mind, you can feel confident, calm, and comforted by the fact that you’re taking a positive step forward into a new chapter of your life.
