Managing Your New Normal: 6 Tips for Navigating Change Effectively

Change is inevitable. It’s a normal part of everyone’s life. However, there will be times that require more change than usual. The past two years, for example, have introduced a wide range of “new normals.” If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the scope of it all, you’re certainly not alone.

With or without pandemic-related adjustments, you may need some tips and suggestions in the area of navigating change. Such skills are invaluable at the point of change and well into the future. After all, if a change is unavoidable, why not be better prepared? To follow, we’ll explore a few options for settling into your new normal.

6 Tips for Navigating Change Effectively

1. One Step at a Time

Patience is your friend. Whether or not the change was by choice, try not to set a deadline or finish date. Appreciate the process and pay close attention to what happens along the way. By not rushing the results, you can feel gratitude for all you’re learning. If the change is negative, it can feel logical to wish it away. But, even in that instance, taking small and practical steps is usually best.

2. Don’t Go It Alone

Ask for help. Build a support system. Humans are designed to work well in teams. Withdrawing in a time of stress only increases your stress levels. When you talk about what you’re going through, you give others a chance to share their experiences. This can be done in person and/or online. Either way, you can find so much peace in discovering how others have navigated similar situations. Take a chance and reach out.

3. Don’t Lose Sight of Yourself

When your world spins into chaos, you can neglect your personal inner compass. Each of us has our own beliefs, opinions, and skills. Sure, change can force you to stretch your comfort zone but it doesn’t have to make you rudderless. Make some quiet cool time for yourself. Reconnect with your wants and needs. If compromises must be made, make them from a place of self-awareness. You absolutely can navigate change effectively without betraying your own set of values.

4. Examine the Big Picture

You would not be the first person to get lost in the details. Focus and mindfulness are essential. However, it is crucial that you also step back and gain a different perspective from time to time. Some of those details, when viewed through a big picture lens, may feel far less daunting. You may recognize that you’ve endured similar situations and come out stronger. Also, blending a micro and macro view can inspire you to keep going. Change is never simple. Accept the complexity and try to make it work in your favor.

5. Stay Positive

Of course, this is much easier said than done. So, it’s important to break change and adjustment into smaller, more easily digestible portions, e.g.

  • Recognize that the path in front of you is rarely linear

  • Accept the inevitable ups and downs

  • Regularly adjust your expectations to match the current situation

  • Set and maintain realistic goals

  • Choose optimism as often as possible

6. Soothe Yourself

I’ve written plenty in the past about the importance of self-care. It cannot be overstated. For example, you want to make healthy choices in the realms of sleep, eating, and exercise. Additionally, you must avoid the temptation of seeking quick fixes. This could include:

  • Alcohol or substance abuse

  • Binge eating

  • Social isolation

  • Risky behaviors

This is where the second tip above becomes even more essential. Self-care is a lot easier and more effective when you have someone to support you and your choices.
